System survival guide
Turn off computer and take power cord out for about 5 minutes
Plug the power cord back in and turn your computer back on
Do a complete system virus scan with your virus detection software (Update definitions before scanning)
Restart computer
Do a spyware full system scan with Microsoft AntiSpy and/or Spy Bot and delete it (Update before scanning)
Consider at this time using a more secure and utility oriented web browser (Mozilla, Netscape or Opera) (Install)
Uninstall all the unneeded or suspicious programs (Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs)
Do a start-up clean-up (Start > Run > msconfig) (Disable what is not needed or suspicious - be careful)
Download and install the available Windows security updates (Start > Programs > Windows Update)
Do a registry cleanup and defragmentation with your registry cleanup software (like TuneUp)
Do disk drive error check (Right click drive > Properties > Tools > Error Checking)
Do a disk drive cleanup (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup)
Restart computer
Defragment the disk drive (Right click drive > Properties > Tools > Defragment now). You may also consider using other defragmentation applications like Diskeeper, they tend to be more efficient and offer more options
Turn off computer and take power cord out for about 5 minutes
(do not forget to take power cord out for about 5 minutes at least once a month)
(do not forget to do frequent virus and spyware scans)
